Useful information and updates for animal feed users

The New Zealand Feed Manufactures Association (NZFMA) and its members have long been committed to providing the dairy industry with commercially-appropriate nutritional solutions for the challenges that it faces. “Our members understand that New Zealand dairy farmers are facing constraints such as decreasing availability and increasing cost of land, which limits the potential for increasing productivity,” said Michael Brooks, Executive Director. “We believe that the use of manufactured feeds provides exciting opportunities for dairy farmers. As animal feed manufacturers, we have a long history in helping livestock farmers to meet production goals, and we’re keen to work closely with dairy farmers to help them maximise productivity.”

The use of manufactured feeds is often perceived to be less profitable than other supplementary feedstuffs, simply because compounds feeds are more expensive when considered on a per kilogram basis. But, profitability is not determined on the basis of input costs alone, and it is essential that the return on investment is considered when evaluating different feedstuffs for use on farm.

“Manufactured feeds are innovative products which are developed using sophisticated science and technology. By virtue of the fact that they are produced by specialist manufacturers with experience handling a diverse range of macro and micro ingredients, manufactured feeds can perform a raft of functions which other feedstuffs simply cannot,” says Michael Brooks.

The resource Increased dairy farm profit using manufactured feed has been developed by the NZFMA, drawing on the wide range of experience available through its network of members. The document highlights some of the opportunities available to farmers to raise production and profitability. Says Michael Brooks, “our members look forward to working with dairy producers to meet and exceed the targets of annual increases of three percent in milksolids and four percent in productivity set out by the Dairy Insight and Dexcel Boards.”
